Funbrain games website is a great place for children to learn math and reading and have fun while doing it. The site offers several categories of games including math and word games. You can also find comic books, movies, web books and arcade games here. There is a 'FunBlog' for the students to read and make comments on. The blog is divided into boys and girls sections and then divided further by age group. Games can be searched by grade from kindergarten all the way through eighth grade. There is a teacher's section as well, including curriculum guides, a homework relief center and a 'QuizLab'.

Many of the games require the Adobe Flash Player, so the first time a Flash game is selected a quick download may be required if Flash isn't already installed on your system. Flash allows for more advanced games than JavaScript can offer. Many of the games on Funbrain still use JavaScript, however, and there is a chance that it may not be installed on your system. In the past it has been difficult to install JavaScript, but the installation has become more streamlined today.

Some of the most enjoyable games on Funbrain are the Flash Arcade games. These games are faster paced and contain cute characters that help you to accomplish various tasks. The math arcade has several different mini games that involve solving math problems. The student can pick their grade level and game piece. As they complete each game their game piece advances on the game board closer to the finish line. After each game is won, they child receives a password which allows them to pick up where they left off. There are also more conventional arcade games that work the same way as the Math Arcade. The games simply involve fast motor skills without the math problems.

Funbrain also offers comics and journals. The graphics are of high quality and easy to read. You can meet characters from the Antarctic in 'On the Rocks' and go through an entire school year with Gregory in 'A Diary of a Wimpy Kid'. There is also a Web Book 'The Callahan Cousins' where you enjoy a summer on a remote island located on the Maine coast. Finally, enjoy reading letters and stories from Natalie and Jenna as they go to camp for the summer in 'Camp Confidential'.

You can also read the FunBlog. You can select sections for boys and girls and different age groups, however, there are only a few entries made per month and they appear to be the same entries for each group.

Still, the best part of Funbrain for learning is the Classic Funbrain section. These games run on bath Flash and JavaScript, however, some of the games can be downloaded and played on your PC or Mac. These games will have to be purchased, but are reasonably priced. The games can be selected by grade, or category and the list is quite large. Almost every game allows the child to select a level and the games offer complete instructions before you start playing. Many games also allow other options to be selected, such as the type of math they want to practice. The score and other stats are visible at all times. Finally, when the game is over, there is an option to play the game again to improve your score.

The numbers games include Math baseball, where you solve math problems to advance runners on the bases. A wrong answer makes an out and after three outs the game is over. Your total runs are then displayed. Change maker is a great game that helps children learn how to use money and calculate the correct change. The game offers different currencies and a choice of maximum amounts for skill level. Simply enter the amount of coins and bills under the corresponding pictures to guess the amount of change you get back. The game also shows pictures of the merchandise for added realism. Finally, Soccer Shootout is a game using mathematics and fractions. There are over a dozen choices which include both fractions and whole numbers as well as level. Simply calculate the fractional math, but be sure it reduce the answer to the smallest fraction. Correct answers either give you a goal or allow you to block the other teams goal. Children will try and get a shutout and will barely realize they are honing their math skills all the while.

The word games deal with grammar, spelling and vocabulary. Scramblesaurus offers dozens of categories and difficulty levels. The student unscrambles words based on a topic and gets a regular clue as well as a scrambled clue to help them. In Spellaroo, the player will see sentences displayed on the screen with several underlined words. Theo object of the game is to find the word that is misspelled. Kangaroos pop up on the screen as the game progresses. The Grammar Gorillas game works similar to Spellaroo, but in this game the student chooses the part of speech requested from a sentence with several underlined words. There is a help section available at all times to freshen up their parts of speech knowledge if needed.

Funbrain is a great site for children to learn and have fun while doing so. The game collection continues to grow, so be sure to check back often. Enjoy having fun while learning on Funbrain.
